ॐ नमो भगवते रुद्राय ॥
oṃ namo bhagavate rudrāya ||
Om. Salutation to the blessed Lord Rudra.
anuvaka 1
नमस्ते रुद्र मन्यव उतोत इषवे नमः ।
namaste rudra manyava utota iṣave namaḥ |
Salutation to you, O Rudra, to your wrath, and salutation too to your arrow.
नमस्ते अस्तु धन्वने बाहुभ्यामुत ते नमः ॥
namaste astu dhanvane bāhubhyāmuta te namaḥ ||
Salutation be to your bow, and salutation too to your two arms.
या त इषुः शिवतमा शिवम्बभूव ते धनुः ।
yā ta iṣuḥ śivatamā śivambabhūva te dhanuḥ |
That arrow of yours which is most auspicious, and that bow of yours which has become auspicious,
शिवा शरव्या या तव तया नो रुद्र मृडय ।
śivā śaravyā yā tava tayā no rudra mṛḍaya |
and that quiver of yours which is auspicious — with these, O Rudra, grant us happiness.
या ते रुद्र शिवा तनूरघोराऽपापकाशिनी ।
yā te rudra śivā tanūraghorā'pāpakāśinī |
That form of yours, O Rudra, which is auspicious, is not terrible, and radiates no evil,
तया नस्तनुवा शन्तमया गिरिशन्ताभिचाकशीहि ॥
tayā nastanuvā śantamayā giriśantābhicākaśīhi ||
with that most peaceful form of yours, O bringer of peace to the mountain-dweller, look upon us.
यामिषुङ्गिरिशन्त हस्ते बिभर्ष्यस्तवे ।
yāmiṣuṅgiriśanta haste bibharṣyastave |
That arrow which you hold in hand, O mountain-dwelling one, ready to shoot,
शिवाङ्गिरित्र ताङ्कुरु मा हिंसीः पुरुषञ्जगत्॥
śivāṅgiritra tāṅkuru mā hiṃsīḥ puruṣañjagat ||
make it gentle, O Giritra, protector of the mountain — do not harm any person or any creature.
शिवेन वचसा त्वा गिरिशाच्छा वदामसि ।
śivena vacasā tvā giriśācchā vadāmasi |
With auspicious words we address you, O Girisha, lord of the mountain.
यथा नस्सर्वमिज्जगदयक्ष्मं सुमना असत् ॥
yathā nassarvamijjagadayakṣmaṃ sumanā asat ||
so that this whole world of ours may be free from disease and well-disposed.
अध्यवोचदधिवक्ता प्रथमो दैव्यो भिषक् ।
adhyavocadadhivaktā prathamo daivyo bhiṣak |
The divine physician, foremost of speakers, has proclaimed —
अहीश्च सर्वाञ्जम्भयन्त्सर्वाश्च यातुधान्यः ॥
ahīśca sarvāñjambhayantsarvāśca yātudhānyaḥ ||
subduing all serpents and all sorceresses,
असौ यस्ताम्रो अरुण उत बभ्रुस्सुमङ्गलः ।
asau yastāmro aruṇa uta babhrussumaṅgalaḥ |
he who is copper-red, ruddy, and tawny, and most auspicious —
ये चेमां रुद्रा अभितो दिक्षु श्रितास्सहस्रशोऽवैषां हेड ईमहे ॥
ye cemāṃ rudrā abhito dikṣu śritāssahasraśo'vaiṣāṃ heḍa īmahe ||
and those Rudras who dwell in the directions around this earth, a thousandfold — of them we beg the anger be turned away.
असौ योऽवसर्पति नीलग्रीवो विलोहितः ।
asau yo'vasarpati nīlagrīvo vilohitaḥ |
He who moves along, the blue-throated, red-hued one —
उतैनङ्गोपा अदृशन्नदृशन्नुदहार्यः ।
utainaṅgopā adṛśannadṛśannudahāryaḥ |
him the cowherds have seen, the water-carriers have seen,
उतैनंविश्वा भूतानि स दृष्टो मृडयाति नः ॥
utainaṃviśvā bhūtāni sa dṛṣṭo mṛḍayāti naḥ ||
and all beings have seen him; may he, thus seen, grant us happiness.
नमो अस्तु नीलग्रीवाय सहस्राक्षाय मीढुषे ।
namo astu nīlagrīvāya sahasrākṣāya mīḍhuṣe |
Salutation be to the blue-throated, thousand-eyed, bountiful giver,
अथो ये अस्य सत्वानोऽहन्तेभ्योऽकरन्नमः ॥
atho ye asya satvāno'hantebhyo'karannamaḥ ||
and to his attendants also we, who mean no harm, offer salutation.
प्रमुञ्च धन्वनस्त्वमुभयोरार्त्नियोर्ज्याम् ।
pramuñca dhanvanastvamubhayorārtniyorjyām |
Release the bowstring from both ends of your bow,
याश्च ते हस्त इषवः परा ता भगवो वप ॥
yāśca te hasta iṣavaḥ parā tā bhagavo vapa ||
and those arrows that are in your hand, O Lord, cast them far away.
अवतत्य धनुस्त्वं सहस्राक्ष शतेषुधे ।
avatatya dhanustvaṃ sahasrākṣa śateṣudhe |
Having unstrung your bow, O thousand-eyed, hundred-quivered one,
निशीर्य शल्यानाम्मुखा शिवो नः सुमना भव ॥
niśīrya śalyānāmmukhā śivo naḥ sumanā bhava ||
and having blunted the points of your arrows, be gracious and well-disposed toward us.
विज्यन्धनुः कपर्दिनो विशल्यो बाणवां उत ।
vijyandhanuḥ kapardino viśalyo bāṇavāṃ uta |
With your bow unstrung, O matted-haired one, and your quiver of arrows without points,
अनेशन्नस्येषव आभुरस्य निषङ्गथिः ॥
aneśannasyeṣava ābhurasya niṣaṅgathiḥ ||
may his arrows be harmless, and his quiver be free of danger.
या ते हेतिर्मीडुष्टम हस्ते बभूव ते धनुः ।
yā te hetirmīḍuṣṭama haste babhūva te dhanuḥ |
That weapon of yours, O most bountiful one, which was in your hand, and that bow of yours,
तयाऽस्मान्, विश्वतस्त्वमयक्ष्मया परिब्भुज ॥
tayā'smān, viśvatastvamayakṣmayā paribbhuja ||
with it, free from disease, protect us on every side.
नमस्ते अस्त्वायुधायानातताय धृष्णवे ।
namaste astvāyudhāyānātatāya dhṛṣṇave |
Salutation be to your weapon, unstretched, the bold one,
उभाभ्यामुत ते नमो बाहुभ्यान्तव धन्वने ॥
ubhābhyāmuta te namo bāhubhyāntava dhanvane ||
and salutation also to both your arms and to your bow.
परि ते धन्वनो हेतिरस्मान् वृणक्तु विश्वतः ।
pari te dhanvano hetirasmān vṛṇaktu viśvataḥ |
May the missile of your bow pass us by on every side,
अथो य इषुधिस्तवारे अस्मन्निधेहि तम् ॥ 1 ॥
atho ya iṣudhistavāre asmannidhehi tam || 1 ||

नमस्ते अस्तु भगवन्विश्वेश्वराय महादेवाय त्र्यम्बकाय त्रिपुरान्तकाय त्रिकाग्निकालाय कालाग्निरुद्राय नीलकण्ठाय मृत्युञ्जयाय सर्वेश्वराय सदाशिवाय श्रीमन्महादेवाय नमः ।
namaste astu bhagavanviśveśvarāya mahādevāya tryambakāya tripurāntakāya trikāgnikālāya kālāgnirudrāya nīlakaṇṭhāya mṛtyuñjayāya sarveśvarāya sadāśivāya śrīmanmahādevāya namaḥ |
Salutation be to you, O blessed one — Vishveshvara (lord of the universe), Mahadeva (the great god), Tryambaka (the three-eyed one), Tripurantaka (destroyer of the three cities), Trikagnikala (master of the threefold fire and time), Kalagnirudra (Rudra as the fire of time), Nilakantha (the blue-throated one), Mrityunjaya (conqueror of death), Sarveshvara (lord of all), Sadashiva (the ever-auspicious one), the glorious Mahadeva — salutation.
नमो हिरण्य बाहवे सेनान्ये दिशाञ्च पतये नमो
namo hiraṇya bāhave senānye diśāñca pataye namo
Salutation to the golden-armed one, the commander of the army, and the lord of the directions — salutation.
नमो वृक्षेभ्यो हरिकेशेभ्यः पशूनाम्पतये नमो
namo vṛkṣebhyo harikeśebhyaḥ paśūnāmpataye namo
Salutation to the one dwelling in the trees, the tawny-locked one, and the lord of animals — salutation.
नमः सस्पिञ्जराय त्विषीमते पथीनाम्पतये नमो
namaḥ saspiñjarāya tviṣīmate pathīnāmpataye namo
Salutation to the reddish-brown, radiant one, and the lord of pathways — salutation.
नमो बभ्लुशाय विव्याधिनेऽन्नानाम्पतये नमो
namo babhluśāya vivyādhine'nnānāmpataye namo
Salutation to the tawny one, the piercer, and the lord of food — salutation.
नमो हरिकेशायोपवीतिने पुष्टानाम्पतये नमो
namo harikeśāyopavītine puṣṭānāmpataye namo
Salutation to the tawny-locked, sacred-thread-wearing one, and the lord of the well-nourished — salutation.
नमो भवस्य हेत्यै जगताम्पतये नमो
namo bhavasya hetyai jagatāmpataye namo
Salutation to Bhava's weapon, and the lord of the worlds — salutation.
नमो रुद्रायातताविने क्षेत्राणाम्पतये नमो
namo rudrāyātatāvine kṣetrāṇāmpataye namo
Salutation to Rudra the bow-bearer, and the lord of fields — salutation.
नमस्सूतायाहन्त्याय वनानाम्पतये नमो
namassūtāyāhantyāya vanānāmpataye namo
Salutation to the charioteer, the unassailable one, and the lord of forests — salutation.
नमो रोहिताय स्थपतये वृक्षाणाम्पतये नमो
namo rohitāya sthapataye vṛkṣāṇāmpataye namo
Salutation to the red one, the master-builder, and the lord of trees — salutation.
नमो मन्त्रिणे वाणिजाय कक्षाणाम्पतये नमो
namo mantriṇe vāṇijāya kakṣāṇāmpataye namo
Salutation to the counsellor, the merchant, and the lord of thickets — salutation.
नमो भुवन्तये वारिवस्कृतायौषधीनाम्पतये नमो
namo bhuvantaye vārivaskṛtāyauṣadhīnāmpataye namo
Salutation to the world-pervading one, the bringer of good rain, and the lord of herbs — salutation.
नम उच्चैर्घोषायाक्रन्दयते पत्तीनाम्पतये नमो
nama uccairghoṣāyākrandayate pattīnāmpataye namo
Salutation to the loud-voiced one, the summoner, and the lord of foot-soldiers — salutation.
नमः कृत्स्नवीताय धावते सत्त्वनाम्पतये नमः ॥ 2 ॥

Salutation to the all-enduring one, the piercer, and the lord of huntresses — salutation.
नमः ककुभाय निषङ्गिणे स्तेनानाम्पतये नमो
namaḥ kakubhāya niṣaṅgiṇe stenānāmpataye namo
Salutation to the peak-dweller, the quiver-bearer, and the lord of thieves — salutation.
नमो निषङ्गिण इषुधिमते तस्कराणाम्पतये नमो
namo niṣaṅgiṇa iṣudhimate taskarāṇāmpataye namo
Salutation to the quiver-bearer, the arrow-holder, and the lord of robbers — salutation.
नमो वञ्चते परिवञ्चते स्तायूनाम्पतये नमो
namo vañcate parivañcate stāyūnāmpataye namo
Salutation to the deceiver, the thoroughgoing deceiver, and the lord of stealthy thieves — salutation.
नमो निचेरवे परिचरायारण्यानाम्पतये नमो
namo nicerave paricarāyāraṇyānāmpataye namo
Salutation to the stalker, the prowler, and the lord of the wilds — salutation.
नमः सृकाविभ्यो जिघांसद्भ्यो मुष्णताम्पतये नमो
namaḥ sṛkāvibhyo jighāṃsadbhyo muṣṇatāmpataye namo
Salutation to those armed with spears, those bent on killing, and the lord of plunderers — salutation.
नमोऽसिमद्भ्यो नक्तञ्चरद्भ्यः प्रकृन्तानाम्पतये नमो
namo'simadbhyo naktañcaradbhyaḥ prakṛntānāmpataye namo
Salutation to sword-bearers, night-wanderers, and the lord of marauders — salutation.
नम उष्णीषिणे गिरिचराय कुलुञ्चानाम्पतये नमो
nama uṣṇīṣiṇe giricarāya kuluñcānāmpataye namo
Salutation to the turban-wearer, the mountain-roamer, and the lord of burglars — salutation.
नम इषुमद्भ्यो धन्वाविभ्यश्च वो नमो
nama iṣumadbhyo dhanvāvibhyaśca vo namo
Salutation to those armed with arrows, and those armed with bows — salutation to you.
नम आतन्वानेभ्यः प्रतिदधानेभ्यश्च वो नमो

नम आयच्छद्भ्यो विसृजद्भ्यश्च वो नमो

नमः स्वपद्भ्यो जाग्रद्भ्यश्च वो नमो

Salutation to those who sleep, and those who stay awake — salutation to you.
नमस्तिष्ठद्भ्यो धावद्भ्यश्च वो नमो

Salutation to the bold one, and to the one who strikes forth.
नमो दूताय च प्रहिताय च

नमस्तीक्ष्णेषवे चायुधिने च
namastīkṣṇeṣave cāyudhine ca
Salutation to the sharp-arrowed one, and to the weapon-bearer.

एषाम्पुरुषाणामेषाम्पशूनाम्मा भेर्माऽरो मो एषाङ्किञ्चनाममत् ।
eṣāmpuruṣāṇāmeṣāmpaśūnāmmā bhermā'ro mo eṣāṅkiñcanāmamat |
do not harm these men, these cattle; let nothing at all of theirs suffer.
या ते रुद्र शिवा तनूश्शिवा विश्वाहभेषजी ।
yā te rudra śivā tanūśśivā viśvāhabheṣajī |
That form of yours, O Rudra, which is auspicious, blessed, and ever a source of healing,
शिवा रुद्रस्य भेषजी तया नो मृड जीवसे ॥
śivā rudrasya bheṣajī tayā no mṛḍa jīvase ||
the auspicious healing power of Rudra — with that, grant us happiness, that we may live.
इमां रुद्राय तवसे कपर्दिने क्षयद्वीराय प्रभरामहे मतिम् ।
imāṃ rudrāya tavase kapardine kṣayadvīrāya prabharāmahe matim |
We offer this hymn of devotion to Rudra, the powerful, matted-haired one, ruler of heroes.
यथा नश्शमसद्द्विपदे चतुष्पदे विश्वम्पुष्टङ्ग्रामे अस्मिन्ननातुरम् ।
yathā naśśamasaddvipade catuṣpade viśvampuṣṭaṅgrāme asminnanāturam |
So that peace may come to our two-footed and four-footed creatures, and all in this village may be nourished and free from illness.
मृडा नो रुद्रोत नो मयस्कृधि क्षयद्वीराय नमसा विधेम ते ।
mṛḍā no rudrota no mayaskṛdhi kṣayadvīrāya namasā vidhema te |
Grant us happiness, O Rudra, and bring us joy; we worship you, ruler of heroes, with salutation.
यच्छञ्च योश्च मनुरायजे पिता तदश्याम तव रुद्र प्रणीतौ ।
yacchañca yośca manurāyaje pitā tadaśyāma tava rudra praṇītau |
What well-being and health father Manu obtained by sacrifice, may we attain that, O Rudra, under your guidance.
मा नो महान्तमुत मा नो अर्भकम्मा न उक्षन्तमुत मा न उक्षितम् ।
mā no mahāntamuta mā no arbhakammā na ukṣantamuta mā na ukṣitam |
Harm not our great one, nor our small one; harm not our growing one, nor our grown one.
मा नोऽवधीः पितरम्मोत मातरम्प्रिया मा नस्तनुवो रुद्र रीरिषः ।
mā no'vadhīḥ pitarammota mātarampriyā mā nastanuvo rudra rīriṣaḥ |
Slay not our father, nor our mother; harm not, O Rudra, our own dear bodies.
मा नस्तोके तनये मा न आयुषि मा नो गोषु मा नो अश्वेषु रीरिषः ।
mā nastoke tanaye mā na āyuṣi mā no goṣu mā no aśveṣu rīriṣaḥ |
Harm not our children, nor our descendants; harm not our life-span; harm not our cattle, nor our horses.
वीरान्मा नो रुद्र भामितोऽवधीर्हविष्मंतो नमसा विधेम ते ।
vīrānmā no rudra bhāmito'vadhīrhaviṣmaṃto namasā vidhema te |
Slay not our warriors, O Rudra, in your wrath; we, offering oblations, worship you with salutation.
आरात्ते गोघ्न उत पूरुषघ्ने क्षयद्वीराय सुम्नमस्मे ते अस्तु ।
ārātte goghna uta pūruṣaghne kṣayadvīrāya sumnamasme te astu |
May your favour be upon us from afar, O destroyer of cattle-slayers and man-slayers, O ruler of heroes.
रक्षा च नो अधि च देव ब्रूह्यधा च नश्शर्म यच्छ द्विबर्हाः ।
rakṣā ca no adhi ca deva brūhyadhā ca naśśarma yaccha dvibarhāḥ |
Protect us, and speak on our behalf, O god; and grant us shelter, O twice-mighty one.
स्तुहि श्रुतङ्गर्तसदंयुवानम्मृगन्न भीममुपहत्नुमुग्रम् ।
stuhi śrutaṅgartasadaṃyuvānammṛganna bhīmamupahatnumugram |
Praise the renowned one, seated on his throne, ever-youthful, fierce as a wild beast, the striker.
मृडा जरित्रे रुद्र स्तवानो अन्यन्ते अस्मन्निवपन्तु सेनाः ।
mṛḍā jaritre rudra stavāno anyante asmannivapantu senāḥ |
Show mercy to your praiser, O Rudra, being praised; may the hosts of any hostile force pass over us, not settle upon us.
परिणो रुद्रस्य हेतिर्वृणक्तु परि त्वेषस्य दुर्मति रघायोः ।
pariṇo rudrasya hetirvṛṇaktu pari tveṣasya durmati raghāyoḥ |
May the weapon of Rudra pass us by; may the ill-will of the fierce, swift one pass us by.
अव स्थिरा मघवद्भ्यस्तनुष्व मीढ्वस्तोकाय तनयाय मृडय ।
ava sthirā maghavadbhyastanuṣva mīḍhvastokāya tanayāya mṛḍaya |
Unstring your firm bow for the sake of the generous devotees, O bountiful one; show mercy for the sake of our children and descendants.
मीढुष्टम शिवतम शिवो नः सुमना भव ।
mīḍhuṣṭama śivatama śivo naḥ sumanā bhava |
O most bountiful, most auspicious one, be gracious and well-disposed toward us.
परमे वृक्ष आयुधन्निधाय कृत्तिंवसान आचर पिनाकम्बिभ्रदागहि ।
parame vṛkṣa āyudhannidhāya kṛttiṃvasāna ācara pinākambibhradāgahi |
Having placed your weapon on the highest tree, wearing the hide, come, bearing your Pinaka bow.
विकिरिद विलोहित नमस्ते अस्तु भगवः ।
vikirida vilohita namaste astu bhagavaḥ |
O scatterer, O red-hued one, salutation be to you, O blessed lord.
यास्ते सहस्रं हेतयोन्यमस्मन्निवपन्तु ताः ।

The thousand weapons that are yours — may they fall upon another, not upon us.

सहस्राणि सहस्रशो ये रुद्रा अधि भूम्याम् ।

The thousands upon thousands of Rudras who exist upon this earth,
तेषां सहस्रयोजनेऽवधन्वानि तन्मसि ।
teṣāṃ sahasrayojane'vadhanvāni tanmasi |
we unstring their bows at a distance of a thousand yojanas.
अस्मिन्महत्यर्णवेऽन्तरिक्षे भवा अधि ।
asminmahatyarṇave'ntarikṣe bhavā adhi |
Those Rudras who dwell in this vast ocean of the mid-region,
नीलग्रीवाश्शितिकण्ठाश्शर्वा अधः, क्षमाचराः ।
nīlagrīvāśśitikaṇṭhāśśarvā adhaḥ, kṣamācarāḥ |
the blue-throated, white-throated Sharvas, who move below, upon the earth,
नीलग्रीवाश्शितिकण्ठा दिवं रुद्रा उपश्रिताः ।
nīlagrīvāśśitikaṇṭhā divaṃ rudrā upaśritāḥ |
the blue-throated, white-throated Rudras, who have taken refuge in heaven,
ये वृक्षेषु सस्पिञ्जरा नीलग्रीवा विलोहिताः ।

those who dwell in trees, reddish-brown, blue-throated, red-hued,

those who strike people through their food, and through the vessels from which they drink,
ये पथाम्पथिरक्षय ऐलबृदा यव्युधः ।

those who guard the pathways, the givers of prosperity, warriors,

those who roam the sacred fords, armed with spears, quiver-bearers,

as many Rudras as there are, and more, who stand spread across the directions,

Salutation to the Rudras who are on earth, who are in the mid-region, who are in heaven, whose food is the wind and whose arrows are the rain — to them, ten to the east, ten to the south, ten to the west, ten to the north, ten above, salutation. May they show us mercy. Whomever we hate, and whoever hates us, that one I place in your jaws. (Anuvaka 11 ends here.)

We worship the three-eyed one, fragrant, the increaser of prosperity,
उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय माऽमृतात् ।

may he free us from death, as the ripe cucumber falls freed from its stem, but not from immortality.
यो रुद्रो अग्नौ यो अप्सु य ओषधीषु यो रुद्रो विश्वा भुवना विवेश तस्मै रुद्राय नमो अस्तु ।
yo rudro agnau yo apsu ya oṣadhīṣu yo rudro viśvā bhuvanā viveśa tasmai rudrāya namo astu |
That Rudra who is in fire, who is in water, who is in herbs, that Rudra who has entered all the worlds — to that Rudra, salutation.
तमु ष्टुहि यस्स्विषुस्सुधन्वा यो विश्वस्य क्षयति भेषजस्य ।
tamu ṣṭuhi yassviṣussudhanvā yo viśvasya kṣayati bheṣajasya |
Praise him, who has good arrows, a good bow, who rules over all healing.
यक्ष्वामहे सौमनसाय रुद्रन्नमोभिर्देवमसुरन्दुवस्य ।
yakṣvāmahe saumanasāya rudrannamobhirdevamasuranduvasya |
We worship Rudra with salutations for his favour; we serve that god, revered by the mighty ones too.
अयम्मे हस्तो भगवानयम्मे भगवत्तरः ।
ayamme hasto bhagavānayamme bhagavattaraḥ |
This hand of mine is blessed; this one of mine is even more blessed.
अयम्मे विश्वभेषजोऽयं शिवाभिमर्शनः ।
ayamme viśvabheṣajo'yaṃ śivābhimarśanaḥ |
This one of mine is the universal healer; this one, whose touch is auspicious.
ये ते सहस्रमयुतम्पाशा मृत्यो मर्त्याय हन्तवे ।
ye te sahasramayutampāśā mṛtyo martyāya hantave |
Those thousands, ten-thousands of snares, O Death, that you have for slaying mortals,
तान् यज्ञस्य मायया सर्वानव यजामहे ।
tān yajñasya māyayā sarvānava yajāmahe |
all of them we ward off through the power of sacrifice.
मृत्यवे स्वाहा मृत्यवे स्वाहा ।
mṛtyave svāhā mṛtyave svāhā |
To Death, an offering; to Death, an offering.

Om, salutation to the blessed Rudra-Vishnu; O Death, protect me.

You are the knot that binds the vital breaths together; let not Rudra, the ender, break them.
