Victory to Ganapati, abode of good virtues, of gracious poet's-face; remover of obstacles, worker of good — victory, victory, dear son of Girija.

chaupai

Jaya jaya jaya Ganapati ganaraju, mamgala bharana karana shubhah kaju.

Victory, victory, victory to Ganapati, lord of the ganas! Worker of good, doer of every auspicious task!

Jai gajabadana sadana sukhadata, vishva vinayaka buddhi vidhata.

Victory, elephant-faced one, abode of joy; Vinayaka of the universe, dispenser of wisdom!

Vakra tunda shuchi shunda suhavana, tilaka tripunda bhala mana bhavana.

Curved trunk, pure and pleasing shoulders; the tilak's triple mark charms the mind on his forehead.

Rajata mani muktana ura mala, svarna mukuta shira nayana vishala.

A garland of jewels and pearls shines upon his chest; a golden crown on his head, and his eyes are wide.

Pustaka pani kuthara trishulam, modaka bhoga sugandhita phulam.

A book, an axe and a trident in his hands; sweets and fragrant flowers as his offering.

Sundara pitambara tana sajita, charana paduka muni mana rajita.

Beautiful yellow robes adorn his body; sandals on his feet delight the minds of sages.

Dhani Shiva suvana shadanana bhrata, Gauri lalana vishva-vikhyata.

Blessed son of Shiva, brother of the six-faced one; darling of Gauri, renowned throughout the world.

Rriddhi-siddhi tava chamvara sudhare, mushaka vahana sohata dvare.

Riddhi and Siddhi wave the fan before you; the mouse, your vehicle, adorns the doorway.

Kahau janma shubha katha tumhari, ati shuchi pavana mamgalakari.

Let me tell your holy story now; utterly pure, sacred, and full of blessing.

Eka samaya giriraja kumari, putra hetu tapa kinha bhari.

Once, the daughter of the mountain king performed great austerity, desiring a son.

Bhayo yaj~na jaba purna anupa, taba pahumchyo tuma dhari dvija rupa.

When her incomparable yajna was complete, you came to her disguised as a Brahmin.

Atithi jani ke Gauri sukhari, bahuvidhi seva kari tumhari.

Recognizing you as her guest, Gauri was overjoyed; she served you in many ways.

Ati prasanna havai tuma vara dinha, matu putra hita jo tapa kinha.

Deeply pleased, you granted a boon — the fruit of her austerity, undertaken for a son.

Milahi putra tuhi, buddhi vishala, bina garbha dharana yahi kala.

You shall have a son of great wisdom — without conceiving him, at this very time.

Gananayaka guna j~nana nidhana, pujita prathama rupa bhagavana.

The lord of the ganas, treasury of virtue and wisdom — worshipped as the first form of God.

Asa kahi antardhana rupa havai, palana para balaka svarupa havai.

So saying, you vanished from sight; and appeared as a child on her lap.

Bani shishu rudana jabahim tuma thana, lakhi mukha sukha nahim Gauri samana.

Taking the form of a babe you began to cry; seeing that face, Gauri's joy knew no equal.

Sakala magana, sukhamamgala gavahim, nabha te surana, sumana varshavahim.

Everyone rejoiced, singing songs of joyous blessing; from the sky, celestials showered flowers.

Shambhu, Uma, bahudana lutavahim, sura munijana, suta dekhana avahim.

Shambhu and Uma gave lavish gifts; gods and sages came to see the child.

Lakhi ati ananda mamgala saja, dekhana bhi aye Shani raja.

Seeing such immense joy and festive celebration, King Shani too came to see.

Nija avaguna guni Shani mana mahim, balaka, dekhana chahata nahim.

Mindful of his own flaw in his heart, Shani did not wish to look upon the child.

Girija kachu mana bheda badhayo, utsava mora, na Shani tuhi bhayo.

Girija, misreading his mind, took some offence: 'Is it that my celebration displeases you, Shani?'

Kahata lage Shani, mana sakuchai, ka karihau, shishu mohi dikhai.

Shani, hesitating, spoke with an uneasy mind: 'What will happen if I look upon your child?'

Nahim vishvasa, Uma ura bhayau, Shani som balaka dekhana kahayau.

Uma's heart held no belief in this; she asked Shani to look upon the child.

Padatahim Shani drriga kona prakasha, balaka sira u.di gayo akasha.

The moment Shani's sidelong glance fell upon him, the child's head flew off into the sky.

Girija giri vikala havai dharani, so duhkha dasha gayo nahim varani.

Girija fell to the ground, distraught; that sorrowful state cannot be described.

Hahakara machyau kailasha, Shani kinhom lakhi suta ko nasha.

A great outcry arose upon Kailasha; Shani, seeing this, had destroyed the son.

Turata garu.da cha.dhi Vishnu sidhayo, kati chakra so gaja sira laye.

At once Vishnu rode Garuda to the scene; he cut off an elephant's head with his discus.

This they placed upon the body of the child; reciting the mantra of life, Shankara set it there.

Nama ganesha Shambhu taba kinhe, prathama pujya buddhi nidhi, vara dinhe.

Shambhu then gave him the name Ganesha; and granted him the boon of being the treasure of wisdom.

Buddhi pariksha jaba Shiva kinha, prrithvi kara pradakshina linha.

When Shiva tested his wisdom, he set the task of circling the whole earth.

Chale shadanana, bharami bhulai, rache baitha tuma buddhi upai.

Kartikeya, the six-faced one, set off at once, wandering and losing his way; Ganesha sat and devised a plan.

Charana matu-pitu ke dhara linhem, tinake sata pradakshina kinhem.

You held the feet of your mother and father, and circled them seven times.

Dhani ganesha kahi Shiva hiye harashe, nabha te surana sumana bahu barase.

'Blessed is Ganesha' Shiva declared, his heart rejoicing; from the sky the celestials rained down flowers in abundance.

Tumhari mahima buddhi ba.dai, shesha sahasamukha sake na gai.

Your glory and greatness of wisdom, even thousand-mouthed Shesha cannot sing in full.

Maim matihina malina dukhari, karahum kauna vidhi vinaya tumhari.

I am foolish, impure and afflicted; how then shall I express my prayer to you?

Bhajata ramasundara prabhudasa, jaga prayaga, kakara, durvasa.

Ramasundar, the servant of the Lord, worships you, as do the world at Prayaga, Kakara and Durvasa.

Aba prabhu daya dina para kijai, apani shakti bhakti kucha dijai.

Now, O Lord, show mercy upon this humble one; grant me some measure of your power and devotion.
