जय-जय चंदा! श्री चन्द्रमा, जय-जय अमृत-अंशु-उजागर। जयति शशांक! कला-निधि, तुम हो नित्य सुधा-सागर॥

jaya-jaya caṃdā! śrī candramā, jaya-jaya amṛta-aṃśu-ujāgara| jayati śaśāṃka! kalā-nidhi, tuma ho nitya sudhā-sāgara||

Victory, victory to Chandra! O Shri Chandrama, victory to the one whose rays shine with nectar. Victory to Shashank, the treasury of divine phases, you are forever the ocean of nectar.

जय-जय चन्द्र! देव! हितकारी, जयति निशाकर! शुभ-उजियारी॥

jaya-jaya candra! deva! hitakārī, jayati niśākara! śubha-ujiyārī||

Victory, victory to Chandra Dev, the benefactor of all; victory to Nishakar, the giver of auspicious light in the night.

तुमसे रात्रि शोभा पाती, किरण तुम्हारी मन को भाती॥

tumase rātri śobhā pātī, kiraṇa tumhārī mana ko bhātī||

Because of you, the night receives its beauty; your rays delight the heart.

क्षीर-सिंधु से तुम उपजाए, कहे जात हो अत्रि-सुत-आए॥

kṣīra-siṃdhu se tuma upajāe, kahe jāta ho atri-suta-āe||

You arose from the Ocean of Milk (Ksheer Sagar); you are also said to have come as the son of sage Atri.

विष्णु-वाम-दृग-अंश स्वरूपा, विश्व-मोद-कारक! तव रूपा॥

viṣṇu-vāma-dṛga-aṃśa svarūpā, viśva-moda-kāraka! tava rūpā||

You are said to be born of a portion of Vishnu's left eye; your form brings delight to the whole world.

श्वेत-वर्ण, दस-अश्व-युक्त-रथ, विचरत नभ में सबके पथ-रथ॥

śveta-varṇa, dasa-aśva-yukta-ratha, vicarata nabha meṃ sabake patha-ratha||

White in hue, you ride a chariot yoked with ten horses, wandering the sky as the path for all.

अमृत-किरणों से मन हरते, सबकी पीड़ा तुम हर लेते॥

amṛta-kiraṇoṃ se mana harate, sabakī pīḍa़ā tuma hara lete||

With your nectar-like rays you captivate the mind; you take away everyone's suffering.

जब तुम उदित गगन में होते, पुष्प, लता सब हर्षित होते॥

jaba tuma udita gagana meṃ hote, puṣpa, latā saba harṣita hote||

When you rise in the sky, the flowers and creepers all rejoice.

सभी जीव-जंतु सुख पाते, शीतल-मंद-पवन-लहराते॥

sabhī jīva-jaṃtu sukha pāte, śītala-maṃda-pavana-laharāte||

All creatures find happiness, as cool gentle breezes ripple through.

तुम हो सत्ताइस-नक्षत्रेश, तुम ही हो सब देव-महेश॥

tuma ho sattāisa-nakṣatreśa, tuma hī ho saba deva-maheśa||

You are the lord of the twenty-seven nakshatras (lunar mansions); you are indeed the great lord among all the gods.

तुम हो सोलह-कला-युक्त-स्वामी, घटते-बढ़ते अन्तर्यामी॥

tuma ho solaha-kalā-yukta-svāmī, ghaṭate-baḍha़te antaryāmī||

You are the master endowed with sixteen kalas (phases), the inner indweller who wanes and waxes.

जब-जब तुम पूरे हो जाते, विविध-उत्सव तब हैं मनाते॥

jaba-jaba tuma pūre ho jāte, vividha-utsava taba haiṃ manāte||

Whenever you become full, various festivals are then celebrated.

तुम पर जब राहु चढ़ आता, पूर्ण-ग्रहण जग में कहलाता॥

tuma para jaba rāhu caḍha़ ātā, pūrṇa-grahaṇa jaga meṃ kahalātā||

When Rahu overtakes you, the world calls it a total (lunar) eclipse.

तुमसे ही सारे व्रत होते, तेरे बिन सब निष्फल होते॥

tumase hī sāre vrata hote, tere bina saba niṣphala hote||

All vratas (vows/fasts) are observed only because of you; without you, they would all be fruitless.

तुम हो औषधि-वन के स्वामी, तुम बिन व्यर्थ सभी फल-कामी॥

tuma ho auṣadhi-vana ke svāmī, tuma bina vyartha sabhī phala-kāmī||

You are the lord of the forest of medicinal herbs; without you, all seekers of results/fruit labour in vain.

तुमसे वर्षा-ऋतु कहलाती, तुम्हारी कला अन्न उपजाती॥

tumase varṣā-ṛtu kahalātī, tumhārī kalā anna upajātī||

Because of you the rainy season comes about; your kala (power/phase) makes the grain grow.

फसलें तुमसे बल हैं पाती, धरती पर हरियाली छाती॥

phasaleṃ tumase bala haiṃ pātī, dharatī para hariyālī chātī||

Crops gain their strength from you; greenery spreads across the earth.

तुम ही पितरों के हो प्यारे, तुमसे सब हैं भाग्य-सँवारे॥

tuma hī pitaroṃ ke ho pyāre, tumase saba haiṃ bhāgya-sa~vāre||

You are dear to the ancestors (pitras); through you everyone's fortune is shaped and adorned.

हो मन के स्वामी तुम देवा, करते सुर-नर-मुनि सब सेवा॥

ho mana ke svāmī tuma devā, karate sura-nara-muni saba sevā||

O Deva, you are the lord of the mind; gods, men, and sages all render service to you.

रोहिणी-प्रिय, देव! हमारे, सब संकट-विपदा को टारे॥

rohiṇī-priya, deva! hamāre, saba saṃkaṭa-vipadā ko ṭāre||

Beloved of Rohini, our deva, remove all our troubles and calamities.

जो कोई जपता नाम तुम्हारा, हर लेते हो सब दुःख सारा॥

jo koī japatā nāma tumhārā, hara lete ho saba duḥkha sārā||

Whoever chants your name, you take away all their sorrow.

रोगी हो या कोई निर्धन, तुम हर लेते हो सब क्रंदन॥

rogī ho yā koī nirdhana, tuma hara lete ho saba kraṃdana||

Whether sick or poor, you take away all their lament.

जिस पर होवे कृपा तुम्हारी, विपदा उसे न व्यापै भारी॥

jisa para hove kṛpā tumhārī, vipadā use na vyāpai bhārī||

On whomever your grace falls, no great calamity can overcome them.

जो नर जपता चन्द्र-मंत्र को, पाता है वह सकल-सुख-तंत्र को॥

jo nara japatā candra-maṃtra ko, pātā hai vaha sakala-sukha-taṃtra ko||

The person who chants the Chandra mantra attains the entire wealth of happiness.

जिसकी होवे दशा तुम्हारी, उसे न कोई चिंता भारी॥

jisakī hove daśā tumhārī, use na koī ciṃtā bhārī||

Whoever is under your dasha (planetary period), has no heavy worry to bear.

सोमवार का व्रत जो करता, उसकी तुम पीड़ा सब हरता॥

somavāra kā vrata jo karatā, usakī tuma pīḍa़ā saba haratā||

Whoever observes the Monday (Somvar) vrat, you take away all their suffering.

श्वेत-पुष्प, अक्षत, दधि-मेवा, करते हैं सब तुम्हारी सेवा॥

śveta-puṣpa, akṣata, dadhi-mevā, karate haiṃ saba tumhārī sevā||

With white flowers, unbroken rice grains, curd and dried fruits, all offer their service to you.

चालीसा जो पढ़े-सुनावे, सब सुख-भोग, परम-पद पावे॥

cālīsā jo paḍha़e-sunāve, saba sukha-bhoga, parama-pada pāve||

Whoever reads or recites this Chalisa attains all happiness and the supreme abode.

'लखि' दीन की सुनो कहानी, जय-जय चन्द्रदेव! सुखखानी॥

'lakhi' dīna kī suno kahānī, jaya-jaya candradeva! sukhakhānī||

Listen to the humble tale of the poet 'Lakhi'; victory, victory to Chandra Dev, the treasury of happiness.

शशि-सुत! 'बुध' के पिता हो, हे शशि! तुम मम-त्राण। शरणागत की रक्षा करो, हे अमृत की खान॥

śaśi-suta! 'budha' ke pitā ho, he śaśi! tuma mama-trāṇa| śaraṇāgata kī rakṣā karo, he amṛta kī khāna||

O Shashi, you are the father of your son Budh (Mercury); O Shashi, you are my protector. Guard those who take refuge in you, O mine of nectar.
