Brihaspati Chalisa

गाऊँ नित मंगलाचरण, गणपति मेरे नाथ। करो कृपा माँ शारदा, जीव रहें मेरे साथ॥

gāū~ nita maṃgalācaraṇa, gaṇapati mere nātha| karo kṛpā mā~ śāradā, jīva raheṃ mere sātha||

I sing an auspicious invocation daily; Ganesh is my lord. Grant your grace, Mother Sharada, so that my faculties remain steady with me.

अज्ञानी मति मंद मैं, हैं गुरुस्वामी सुजान। दोषों से मैं भरा हुआ, तुम हो कृपा निधान॥

ajñānī mati maṃda maiṃ, haiṃ gurusvāmī sujāna| doṣoṃ se maiṃ bharā huā, tuma ho kṛpā nidhāna||

I am ignorant and dull of mind, but you, Guru-lord, are all-wise; I am full of faults, while you are the treasure-house of grace.

वीर देव भक्तन हितकारी। सुर नर मुनिजन के उद्धारी॥

vīra deva bhaktana hitakārī| sura nara munijana ke uddhārī||

O heroic deity, benefactor of devotees, you are the deliverer of gods, men, and sages.

वाचस्पति सुर गुरु पुरोहित। कमलासन बृहस्पति विराजित॥

vācaspati sura guru purohita| kamalāsana bṛhaspati virājita||

Vachaspati, priest and guru of the gods, Brihaspati is seated resplendent upon a lotus seat.

स्वर्ण दंड वर मुद्रा धारी। पात्र माल शोभित भुज चारी॥

svarṇa daṃḍa vara mudrā dhārī| pātra māla śobhita bhuja cārī||

You hold a golden staff and show the boon-granting gesture; your four arms are adorned with a vessel and a rosary.

है स्वर्णिम आवास तुम्हारा। पीत वदन देवों में न्यारा॥

hai svarṇima āvāsa tumhārā| pīta vadana devoṃ meṃ nyārā||

Your abode is golden, and your yellow-hued face is unique among all the gods.

स्वर्णारथ प्रभु अति ही सुखकर। पाण्डुर वर्ण अश्व चले जुतकर॥

svarṇāratha prabhu ati hī sukhakara| pāṇḍura varṇa aśva cale jutakara||

Your golden chariot, O Lord, is most delightful, drawn onward by pale-white horses yoked to it.

स्वर्ण मुकुट पीताम्बर धारी। अंगिरा नन्दन गगन विहारी॥

svarṇa mukuṭa pītāmbara dhārī| aṃgirā nandana gagana vihārī||

Wearing a golden crown and yellow garments, son of sage Angira, you roam freely through the heavens.

अज अगम्य अविनाशी स्वामी। अनन्त वरिष्ठ सर्वज्ञ नामी॥

aja agamya avināśī svāmī| ananta variṣṭha sarvajña nāmī||

Unborn, unfathomable, imperishable Lord, infinite, eldest, all-knowing and renowned.

श्रीमत् धर्म रूप धन दाता। शरणागत सर्वापद् त्राता॥

śrīmat dharma rūpa dhana dātā| śaraṇāgata sarvāpad trātā||

Glorious embodiment of dharma and giver of wealth, you save from every calamity all who take refuge in you.

पुष्य नाथ ब्रह्म विद्या विशारद। गुण बरने सुर गण मुनि नारद॥

puṣya nātha brahma vidyā viśārada| guṇa barane sura gaṇa muni nārada||

Lord of the Pushya star, master of divine knowledge, even the gods, sages, and Narada sing of your virtues.

कठिन तप प्रभास में कीन्हा। शंकर प्रसन्न हो वर दीन्हा॥

kaṭhina tapa prabhāsa meṃ kīnhā| śaṃkara prasanna ho vara dīnhā||

You performed hard austerities at Prabhas; Shankar, well pleased, granted you a boon.

देव गुरु ग्रह पति कहाओ। निर्मल मति वाचस्पति पाओ॥

deva guru graha pati kahāo| nirmala mati vācaspati pāo||

You came to be called the guru of the gods and lord of the planets, attaining the pure wisdom of Vachaspati.

असुर बने सुर यज्ञ विनाशक। करें सुरक्षित मन्त्र से सुर मख॥

asura bane sura yajña vināśaka| kareṃ surakṣita mantra se sura makha||

When demons rose to destroy the sacrifices of the gods, you protected the gods' rites through your mantras.

बनकर देवों के उपकारी। दैत्य विनाशे विघ्न निवारी॥

banakara devoṃ ke upakārī| daitya vināśe vighna nivārī||

Becoming the benefactor of the gods, you destroyed the demons and removed all obstacles.

बृहस्पति धनु मीन के नायक। लोक द्विज नय बुद्धि प्रदायक॥

bṛhaspati dhanu mīna ke nāyaka| loka dvija naya buddhi pradāyaka||

Brihaspati, ruler of Sagittarius and Pisces, you grant righteous wisdom to the world and to the twice-born.

मावस वीर वार व्रत धारे। आश्रय दें सर्व पाप निवारें॥

māvasa vīra vāra vrata dhāre| āśraya deṃ sarva pāpa nivāreṃ||

Those who keep the vow on the sacred new-moon Thursday, you grant them refuge and remove all their sins.

पीताम्बर हल्दी पीला अन्न। शक्कर मधु पुखराज भू-लवण॥

pītāmbara haldī pīlā anna| śakkara madhu pukharāja bhū-lavaṇa||

Yellow cloth, turmeric, yellow grains, sugar, honey, the topaz gem, and salt of the earth (are your favoured offerings).

पुस्तक स्वर्ण अश्व दान कर। दे देवें जीव अनेक सुखद वर॥

pustaka svarṇa aśva dāna kara| de deveṃ jīva aneka sukhada vara||

By donating books, gold, and horses, a soul is granted many joyous blessings.

विद्या सिन्धु स्वयं कहलाते। भक्तों को सन्मार्ग चलाते॥

vidyā sindhu svayaṃ kahalāte| bhaktoṃ ko sanmārga calāte||

You are called the very ocean of knowledge; you guide your devotees onto the righteous path.

इन्द्र किया अपमान अकारण। विश्वरूपा गुरु किये धारण॥

indra kiyā apamāna akāraṇa| viśvarūpā guru kiye dhāraṇa||

Indra once insulted you without cause; then the guru's place was taken up by Vishwarupa.

बढ़ा कष्ट सब राज गँवाया। दानव ध्वज स्वर्ग लहराया॥

baḍha़ā kaṣṭa saba rāja ga~vāyā| dānava dhvaja svarga laharāyā||

Great suffering followed and Indra lost his entire kingdom; the demons' banner came to fly over heaven.

क्षमा माँग फिर स्तुति कीन्ही। विपदा सकल जीव हर लीन्ही॥

kṣamā mā~ga phira stuti kīnhī| vipadā sakala jīva hara līnhī||

Indra begged forgiveness and offered praise; you then took away all his troubles.

बढ़ा देवों में मान तुम्हारा। कीरति गावें सकल संसारा॥

baḍha़ā devoṃ meṃ māna tumhārā| kīrati gāveṃ sakala saṃsārā||

Your honour grew among the gods, and the whole world sings your glory.

दोष बिसार शरण में लीजै। उर आनन्द प्रभु भर दीजै॥

doṣa bisāra śaraṇa meṃ lījai| ura ānanda prabhu bhara dījai||

Setting aside my faults, take me into your refuge; O Lord, fill my heart with joy.

सद्गुरु तेरी प्रबल माया। तेरा पारा ना कोई पाया॥

sadguru terī prabala māyā| terā pārā nā koī pāyā||

O true Guru, your power is immense; none has ever found the limit of your greatness.

सब तीर्थ गुरु चरण समाये। समझे विरला बहु सुख पाये॥

saba tīrtha guru caraṇa samāye| samajhe viralā bahu sukha pāye||

All places of pilgrimage dwell at the Guru's feet; only a rare soul understands this and attains great joy.

अमृत वारिद सदृश वाणी। हिरदय धार भये ब्रह्मज्ञानी॥

amṛta vārida sadṛśa vāṇī| hiradaya dhāra bhaye brahmajñānī||

Your speech is like a cloud of nectar; holding it within the heart, one becomes a knower of Brahman.

शोभा मुख से बरनि न जाई। देवें भक्ति जीव मनचाही॥

śobhā mukha se barani na jāī| deveṃ bhakti jīva manacāhī||

Your splendour cannot be described in words; you grant devotees the devotion their hearts desire.

जो अनाथ ना कोइ सहाई। लख चौरासी पार कराहीं॥

jo anātha nā koi sahāī| lakha caurāsī pāra karāhīṃ||

Those who are orphaned, with none to help them, you carry across the eighty-four lakh cycles of birth.

प्रथम गुरु का पूजन कीजे। गुरु चरणामृत रुच-रुच पीजे॥

prathama guru kā pūjana kīje| guru caraṇāmṛta ruca-ruca pīje||

First of all, worship the Guru; drink the nectar of the Guru's feet with loving relish.

मृग तृष्णा गुरु दर्शन राखी। मिले मुक्ति हो सब जग साखी॥

mṛga tṛṣṇā guru darśana rākhī| mile mukti ho saba jaga sākhī||

Giving up the mirage of worldly illusion, hold fast to the vision of the Guru; liberation is attained, as the whole world bears witness.

चरणन रज सद्गुरु सिर धारे। पा गये दास पदारथ सारे॥

caraṇana raja sadguru sira dhāre| pā gaye dāsa padāratha sāre||

Bearing the dust of the true Guru's feet upon the head, the devotee attains every treasure.

जग के कार विहारण दोड़े। गुरु मोह के बन्धन तोड़े॥

jaga ke kāra vihāraṇa doḍa़e| guru moha ke bandhana toḍa़e||

One (who serves the Guru) breaks free of worldly entanglements; the Guru severs the bonds of attachment.

पारस माणिक नीलम रत्ना। गुरुवर सम्मुख व्यर्थ कल्पना॥

pārasa māṇika nīlama ratnā| guruvara sammukha vyartha kalpanā||

The philosopher's stone, ruby, sapphire, and other gems, before the great Guru, are mere vain imaginings.

कर निष्काम भक्ति गुरुवर की। सुन्दर छवि धारे सुखकर की॥

kara niṣkāma bhakti guruvara kī| sundara chavi dhāre sukhakara kī||

Offer selfless devotion to the great Guru, and hold his beautiful, joy-giving image within your heart.

गुरु पताका जो फहराएँ। मन क्रम वचन ध्यान से ध्यावें॥

guru patākā jo phaharāe~| mana krama vacana dhyāna se dhyāveṃ||

Those who raise the Guru's banner and meditate on him in thought, word, and deed.

काल रूप यम नहीं सतावें। निश्चय गुरुवर पिंड छुड़ावें॥

kāla rūpa yama nahīṃ satāveṃ| niścaya guruvara piṃḍa chuḍa़āveṃ||

Yama, the form of death, does not trouble them; surely the great Guru frees them from bondage.

भूत पिशाच निकट ना आवें। रोगी रोग मुक्त हो जावें॥

bhūta piśāca nikaṭa nā āveṃ| rogī roga mukta ho jāveṃ||

Ghosts and evil spirits do not come near them; the sick are freed from their afflictions.

संतति हीन संस्तुति गावें। मंगल होय पुत्र-धन पावें॥

saṃtati hīna saṃstuti gāveṃ| maṃgala hoya putra-dhana pāveṃ||

Those without children who sing his praise attain auspiciousness and are blessed with children and wealth.

जो नर गुण गा हिरदय हर्षावे। स्नेह जीव चरणों में लावे॥

jo nara guṇa gā hiradaya harṣāve| sneha jīva caraṇoṃ meṃ lāve||

The one who sings his virtues and gladdens his own heart brings his soul with love to the Guru's feet.

जीव चालीसा पढ़े पढ़ावे। पूर्ण शांति को पल में पावें॥

jīva cālīsā paḍha़e paḍha़āve| pūrṇa śāṃti ko pala meṃ pāveṃ||

Whoever reads or has this Chalisa read attains complete peace in a moment.

मात पिता के संग मनु, गुरु चरण में लीन। किरपा सब पर कीजिये, जान जगत में दीन॥

māta pitā ke saṃga manu, guru caraṇa meṃ līna| kirapā saba para kījiye, jāna jagata meṃ dīna||

Along with my mother and father, my mind is absorbed in the Guru's feet; bestow your grace upon all, knowing us to be humble in this world.

बृहस्पति चालीसा जो पढ़े, भक्ति भाव मन लाय। ज्ञान धर्म धन यश मिले, सब दुःख दूर हो जाय॥

bṛhaspati cālīsā jo paḍha़e, bhakti bhāva mana lāya| jñāna dharma dhana yaśa mile, saba duḥkha dūra ho jāya||

Whoever reads the Brihaspati Chalisa with devotion in their heart attains knowledge, dharma, wealth, and fame; all sorrows are removed.
