Who is Vairagyanand Ji Ji

Shri Swami Vairagyanand Ji Maharaj is the third master of the Shri Anandpur line of the Paramhans Advait Mat, succeeding Swami Swaroopanand Ji Maharaj. He is closely identified with Shri Anandpur Dham in Madhya Pradesh, the centre he was entrusted with and subsequently led.

Names & Epithets

He is also known within the Anandpur line by the title Shri Paramhans Avataar Ji, under which Shri Anandpur's own records name its Third Holy Master. Sources render the monastic name as Vairagyanand Ji or Vairagya Anand Ji.

Iconography & Symbols

A twentieth-century historical figure with no classical iconography. Veneration is through portraits and through his association with Shri Anandpur Dham.

Key Stories

Shri Anandpur was established during Swaroopanand Ji's lifetime: land was purchased on 4 August 1930, and in 1931 Swaroopanand Ji visited, fulfilling a promise made earlier by Advaitanand Ji. Within the tradition Vairagyanand Ji is remembered as the disciple entrusted by Swaroopanand Ji with responsibility for building and then running Shri Anandpur, which is how the centre came under his charge after Swaroopanand Ji's samadhi. Shri Anandpur's own record notes that its Third Holy Master took up permanent residence there in 1939.

Family & Relations

His guru was Swami Swaroopanand Ji Maharaj (1884-1936), whose own guru was Swami Advaitanand Ji Maharaj, Paramhans Dayal Ji. The Advait Mat Anandpur line runs:

  1. Shri Swami Advaitanand Ji Maharaj, Paramhans Dayal Ji 2. Shri Swami Swaroopanand Ji Maharaj 3. Shri Swami Vairagyanand Ji Maharaj, also titled Shri Paramhans Avataar Ji
  2. Shri Swami Beantanand Ji Maharaj 5. Shri Swami Darshan Poornanand Ji Maharaj 6. Shri Swami Vichar Poornanand Ji Maharaj

Significance

He represents the Anandpur line's continuation of the Advait Mat after Swaroopanand Ji, parallel to the Nangli Sahib and Sar Shabd Mission line continued by Swami Nijatamanand Ji. Shri Anandpur Dham grew into the principal centre of its own line of the tradition, with its own succession of masters extending to the present day.
